A Senior Fellow with The Ocean Foundation, Richard has long been working in cooperative social change efforts to protect natural systems on land and in the ocean from damage by industrial activities. His four decades of ongoing effort has helped to create of the Gulf of the Farallones, Cordell Bank, Channel Islands, and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries. Richard also spent 25 years working to help secure federal protection from offshore drilling for Alaska’s fishery-rich Bristol Bay, and the recent major expansion of California’s Cordell Bank and Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuaries brings another multi-decade project to fruition.
